CHAPTER TWELVE

“There was no choice, Elias…”

“She would have died without my blood…”

“I understand, whatever it takes…”

Madeline thinks of a boy who loved horses but not to ride. She thinks of a small child left to bleed out in the place he once played.

She thinks of the pain, the death, the fear.

Her fury at the injustice burns hot.

This place is neither the place of humans nor the place of Daemons. It is elsewhere, the space between.

She can see nothing, she cannot move.

She can hear, she has thoughts.

Rage approaches...called by her own. The heat of it engulfs her mind. It boils inside her as if molten lava has been spooned into her open gut. So much rage.

The person she was and the person she is...are no longer the same.

Wrath.

Vengeance.

The rage is who she is now.

Elias waited a few feet from his Mate, his Madeline. She was healing rapidly due to an emergency infusion of blood from Lord Titus.

The founder, the father of the Were race, had answered the panicked call of West Texas Pack when half a dozen Purists landed among them.

Five children and two Mates were slaughtered before they were able to gain the upper hand.

Talia Kassis was not one of them.

Madeline saved her life.

By the time Titus arrived on the scene, most of the bones in Madeline’s torso had been crushed or broken. Her heart was barely beating due to the trauma of her collapsed sternum.

Two Purists appeared to transport their brethren - the winged Daemon who’d laughed as he slaughtered a child and stomped Elias’ fragile woman nearly to death.

Desiree, Titus’s Mate, shot a high caliber round through the neck of one but the others winked away.

In their desperation to save Madeline - a Mate, one of their doctors, and a valued member of Pack - they did not pursue them. Titus promised to exact justice for his crimes. While Elias appreciated it, he wanted to bathe in the Purist’s blood as he screamed for mercy he would not receive.

Madeline stirred but did not awaken.

Her heart beat too fast, her breathing was rapid, and she emitted a steady, low growl that was inaudible to humans but made his Wolf stand at attention.

Elias lowered into a chair beside the door and waited for his Mate to come back to him.

* * *

Fury bubbled like molten lava inside her.

The presence that filled her whispered that there would be death. Vengeance for crimes committed.

Madeline agreed they should hunt the Purist killers, one by one, and put them down. Never strong or trained to fight, she felt the need to spill their blood. To watch it flow over her own hand and soak into the earth.

For Ivan.

For Sam.

For countless others.

The presence laughed in her mind.

She would kill them all.

* * *

Elias opened his eyes and stared at a Madeline he did not recognize. Her scent was off. She stood by the window of the room where she’d been recovering.

Awash in the light of the moon, silver white hair that fell to her waist glowed bright.
